DINK LIFE

We’re the Turners, and we’re DINKs: Double Income No Kids. No kids, if you don’t count two adorable fur babies. We have been together for over ten years, living together for over six years, and married for a little over a year and a half. We met in business school in the summer of 2007, at NC State University (Go Pack!, but in reality he is a Miami fan and she could care less about sports, so we only care about their academic rep).

After graduation, we chased the best job opportunities we could find around the country. Today, we have both launched careers in Marketing and Accounting. Typical, right? We are a modern day couple, she is the breadwinner (#thefutureisfemale), but he is in a close second (#seriouslyveryclosesecond). Over the last six years we have followed her career around the US, starting in North Carolina, Texas, New Jersey and now, New York.

Today, we live in an old, I mean “charming”, walk up apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. And while all of our friends seem to be multiplying, evident by the excessive number of babies on our newsfeed, we have no problem being selfish and denying our parents anything but grand puppies. DINK is not yet the permanent status, although it seems to be heading in that direction (please make this hugely popular so she can’t change her mind). And while we love seeing little Johnny’s first steps on Instagram, we also love seeing the world. Thus, this blog… a resource for anyone looking to travel the world like DINKs, whether that’s the permanent status, weekend status, or new status (hello, empty nesters), we want to help you experience new places and create new memories.

An important difference to highlight, we like our jobs, sometimes we even love them, so we are not the type to quit the cubical or office life to travel the world with a backpack and a dream. I think we can agree, most people would have a hard time taking the “eat, pray, love” path. But all is not lost, you can experience adventure and explore the unknown on your vacation time, with a steady stream of income! We each have about 4 weeks of vacation every year, and we use Every, Last, Minute, of it. Side note, never leave vacation time on the table, especially if you can’t roll the time. Which after 2009, I suspect most of you can’t, so use it! Forfeiting vacation is giving money back to your employer.

If you had told me ten years ago that we would start a travel blog, I wouldn’t believe it. His first trip abroad was in 2014, and the first place… South East Asia, was not exactly a “traveling for beginners”, but it was that moment that we were bit with the travel bug. Since then, we have seen 14 countries together. We had our engagement pictures in Prague (2015), a Wanderlust wedding theme (2016) and now we embark on this blog adventure.

We have traveled alone, together and with others. We have African safaris in 2018 and chartered a boat through Croatia with friends and family in 2019. I am sure we will have many learnings to share, outside of itineraries and packing lists. We encourage you to follow our travels on all our platforms, and hope our blog will be the resource for you when it comes to planning your own, full of itineraries, reviews, his and her packing lists, tips, tricks and more.

Now, fasten your seat belts, put your tray tables and seat back in the upright position and let’s travel like DINKs.

Wheels up,

Richard & Erin
